There is no one right way to find a job after you graduate from university, but there are many different methods available to you if they suit the industry you want to get into.
You might spend time at recruitment fairs, or you could have luck when sending prospective letters to employers you’re interested in or you might see whether social media provides any fruitful opportunities. It could also be that you try a combination of these techniques to see where it takes you.
Out of all three of these techniques (and there are many more that I haven’t included here), using social media is easily the most modern approach.
But how can you actually go about using social media for job hunting, and is it really a viable option when it comes to your personal search? I have some tips for which networks you can use and how.
Potentially the easiest place to start your job search through social media is on LinkedIn. If you haven’t already signed up, now might be a good time to give the network a go.
Aside from creating your profile and having your relevant experience listed in one handy place, you can also take advantage of the extensive job listings available on the website, and also in the LinkedIn Job Search app that you can download for Android and iPhone.
It’s possible to apply for some jobs here without needing to submit an additional application or CV; you can simply do it through your profile, making it very quick and easy to do. You can also save jobs so you can apply for them later; really helpful if you’re out and about and don’t have access to a keyboard for a longer application. Be sure to work on your profile to that is stands out and is a profile you would be proud for a prospective employer to see.
You can follow many companies, recruiters and industry groups on Twitter, which makes it a good place to stay up-to-date with job openings. In some industries, you may even find that some positions are advertised through sponsored listings on Twitter, so keep an eye out for these.
Due to you wanting to retain privacy in your job search and applications, it’s best to reply away from the public eye. Try and respond either through a direct message, use the email address referenced in the Tweet, or follow a link through to the website where the job advertisement is hosted.
Don’t forget that potential employers are also able to see what you Tweet about on a daily basis, so try and keep your communications friendly and professional.
You may also find other networks helpful when it comes to searching for jobs, whether it’s Facebook to discover the culture of companies you’re interested in, or even somewhere like Instagram where some businesses will provide you with a behind the scenes view of what goes on.
These networks can provide you with great insights, helping you to assess whether they are the type of company you’d want to work for.
