Times are changing. According to a study conducted by Intuit, over 40 percent of the workforce will become freelancers by the year 2020. If you are planning on setting up your own business or becoming a freelancer in the near future, having an entrepreneurial mindset can help you thrive in your field.
An entrepreneurial mindset can also be important in building a professional career - even if you’re not aiming to become a business owner in the near future. It can help you become more resourceful, flexible and ready to adapt, regardless of what the current situation is like.
Here are a few tips to help you develop an entrepreneurial mindset.
Successful entrepreneurs are like sponges. They love to learn about new theories, ways of doing things, and technology, among others. Entrepreneurs have insatiable appetites when it comes to learning. What makes them unique is that they love to apply what they have learned to their business endeavours.
If you want to think and act like a successful entrepreneur, you need to find opportunities to broaden your knowledge and skills. Take adult education classes if you can. This is a cheaper option as compared to going back to school and getting a degree. You can also find ways to learn online. Read books, watch videos, do whatever you can to develop new skills that will be beneficial in your chosen field.
Develop your soft skills along the way as well. Soft skills that are always on demand involve problem solving and critical thinking. Employers are always on the lookout for people who can think outside the box.
Learn from failure
Disappointments are a part of life. People make mistakes with some decisions producing pitiful results. Do not be afraid of failure. See it as a way to learn from your mistakes and become better. Learn from your defeats to become a stronger, wiser individual.
Do your best in whatever you do. As a kid, you may have been told to constantly follow the rules. You adhere to social norms to blend in with your friends or with the crowd. Kids are not typically taught to be unique.
On the other hand, adults are encouraged to find and embrace the aspects that make them unique. This is what successful entrepreneurs do. They look for what makes them different from the competition and utilise it to their advantage.
As an employee, you should also find the skills that make you unique, and develop them. Developing these skills can make you into an indispensable employee.
Find the right pace
Pace yourself. When building and running a business, there is always a lot of things to do and not enough time to finish them all. Pushing yourself to your limits is an admirable trait but you can only do it for so long.
The same can be said for professionals. Follow a pace that’s sustainable for you. Employers may like a hardworking individual, but your ability to work overtime is not the only desirable characteristic you can have. You need to take care of your health as well. Overdoing your work will only cause you to burn out quicker.
Find a good role model
Whether you are an entrepreneur or a professional working in any field, you need to find a mentor, coach or a role model. This is a person you can look up to, whose actions you would like to emulate. If possible, look for a person who can give you advice or work on self-improvement strategies with you.
When searching for a role model or mentor, try to look for the best people in your specific field and try to follow their ways. Learn more about them, know what they did right and understand how they think. You are not simply copying their behavior but imbibing their way of thinking and mindset as well.
Whether you are an employee or business owner, there are ways to make yourself more successful and thrive in whatever field you are in right now. You may not be interested in setting up your own business, but having the same mindset as an entrepreneur can help you become a better worker and professional in your field.
