The UK government has granted the CELTA (Certificate in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages) Advanced Learner Loan scheme eligibility, giving UK graduates the opportunity to apply for financial support to help them complete the course at a college or training provider in England. CELTA is a highly respected TEFL qualification from Cambridge English Language Assessment (Cambridge English), part of the University of Cambridge.
English language teaching is a popular option for graduates wishing to spend time living and working abroad, whether as a long-term career or a way of funding an extended gap year. Demand for native and non-native English-speakers is consistently high across the globe and especially in Asia, parts of Eastern Europe, Spain, Italy and Germany.
CELTA is considered to be the gold standard TEFL qualification, trusted by employers, language schools and governments worldwide. Based on an intensive four-week course it gives individuals the core skills needed to succeed in the classroom, blending both theory and authentic classroom teaching practice on real language learners. Eligible individuals can apply for funding of up to £1,417 and loans do not have to be repaid until the course has been completed and the person is earning more than a specified amount.
Blandine Bastie, Country Head, UK and Ireland, Cambridge English, commented: “This funding boost will help even more graduates gain an internationally recognised teaching qualification. Teaching English is an enormously rewarding career choice, and CELTA is the passport to exciting teaching posts in the UK or abroad. It enables you to get a job quickly at the same time as exploring new cultures and countries.
"With so many TEFL courses available it is often difficult to determine the quality qualifications from the cheaper alternatives. The teaching practice is what sets CELTA apart from other qualifications – it offers hands-on experience with the chance to apply learning in the classroom with real English language learners. If you want to add a gold standard qualification to your CV, you should look no further than CELTA."
There are over 40 CELTA centres in England that accept Advanced Learner Loans and the course can be taken as either a full-time course, a part-time course or online as a blended learning course, combining online self-study with hands-on teaching practice. The CELTA qualification is valued by employers around the world – including English language schools, ministries of education, respected employers such as the British Council, International House, Navitas and EF and professional organisations such as IATEFL. Research carried out by Cambridge English highlights just how much value employers place on CELTA: 9 out of 10 employers in the UK and 7 out of 10 employers worldwide (including the UK) specifically ask for CELTA in job adverts.
David Nicholls, CELTA graduate, Adult Education Wolverhampton, commented: "Since graduating from university, all I wanted to do was travel and experience the different cultures I read about during my degree. Now, with the CELTA qualification, I have the opportunity to travel and work around the world; I also plan to move back to the UK to teach English after my travels. CELTA in particular appealed to me because I wanted to obtain a top qualification as I knew this would enable me to get a better job. I also felt that CELTA would better prepare me for teaching as I had no prior experience and the course is designed for new teachers. When I discovered that I could get a loan to cover the costs of the course, it was an easy decision to make. The application process for the funding was quick and straightforward, I knew by the end of the day that I had qualified for the loan. Completing the CELTA course really has been life changing and I would recommend it to anyone interested in working abroad."
