Who is TJX Europe?
You might not have heard of TJX Europe, but you’ve probably heard of our brands – TK Maxx and Homesense. This is down to our Off-Price business model, which is at the heart of everything we do. Our opportunistic buyers are on the hunt throughout the year, buying merchandise from thousands of vendors around the world. It’s about thinking fast, being creative and making great deals.

The Brand and Marketing team influences how the TK Maxx and Homesense brands engage customers in exciting and distinctive ways to ensure commercial success both in store and online. That’s where you come in.
Our Brand & Marketing Placement Programme
Your experience starts with a comprehensive induction that combines classroom learning with store visits, team meetings and workshops. With the support of your mentor and buddy, you’ll develop the people skills and technical know-how of the professionals. You’ll also thrive in a constantly changing environment where decisions happen quickly and everyone works together to make the incredible possible.
Joining a dynamic and collaborative team of 100+ marketers who plan and execute across six different countries, you’ll rotate across two of our Brand & Marketing teams which may include Communications, Corporate Responsibility, Gift Cards or Store Experience.
Through partnerships with world-class creative agencies you’ll develop stand-out communications content that can flex across markets. You’ll analyse data to ensure customers across Europe are targeted through the right channels at the right time. Together with amplifying our corporate responsibility initiatives, growing our gift card business, future-proofing our store experience or keeping a keen eye on social media trends to ensure relevance, you’ll be exposed to the entire marketing mix – and more!

The skills you’ll need
Alongside the requirements listed below, if you have European language skills – particularly German or Polish – that would be great. And if you’ve lived and worked in Europe, even better. In a business like ours, these are great assets to have.

Who? You might ask. But that’s OK, because while you might not have heard of us, you’ve probably heard of our brands – TK Maxx and Homesense.

Let’s go back to the beginning
Our story begins in the United States in 1977 with the opening of two TJ Maxx stores in Massachusetts. If you’re really interested in the history – including why it’s TJ Maxx in the US and Canada but TK Maxx in Europe – then you can read all about it here.
The important bit is that we launched TK Maxx in Europe in 1994 and followed that with Homesense in 2008. The stores quickly became market leaders in a number of European countries.
We now have 547 stores across Europe as well as a successful online retail business. We’re growing at a fantastic pace globally and TJX Europe is one of our key channels for growth. This all makes TJX Europe the perfect place to launch your career.

Merchandiser, Women’s Accessories
University of Leeds – Textile Design
Why did you decide to join TJX Europe? Initially it was because I was a very enthusiastic TK Maxx shopper! I studied textile design at University and was always interested in working in the retail business. Once I found out a bit more, TJX Europe really appealed to me as it seemed to offer a dedicated training programme alongside the promise of an exciting and fast-paced career with a unique business concept - which it has totally delivered on.
Tell me about your programme. I joined TJX Europe in 2009 on the Buying and Merchandising Graduate Programme. The training was very structured, which I liked, and was fast paced and exposes you quickly to the business model and our company values. It’s not every Graduate Programme where you get to meet the President of the company in your first week! Throughout my induction period I felt very supported and that hasn't changed at all since. In my four years here I've moved around the company, working within the Womenswear, Accessories, Footwear and Menswear divisions, and progressed from an Allocation Analyst to a Merchandiser within three years. There is a huge amount of opportunity for career progression and we're encouraged to seek out opportunities for personal development and growth, whether that involves training new Graduates, attending learning and development workshops, getting out to vendors and stores with your buying team or participating in fundraising activities for charity.
What is it like to work at TJX Europe? The company is going through a lot of growth with new stores opening throughout Europe and the development of our e-commerce business, and every week can be different which makes it a very exciting place to come to work. Although we are now a large and very established retail business, we still have a small company feel. The office is a friendly and we pride ourselves on that. Everyone is encouraged to get involved, share their opinions and be empowered to make decisions at every level of the company.
What is a typical working day like? Fast paced and exciting. One of the best things about working for an off-price retailer is that you're never quite sure what opportunities there might be in the market, and your focus can change very quickly. As Merchandiser for a whole product area I have a lot of responsibility and spend my day developing and coaching my team, and partnering with my buying colleagues and Merchandise Director to identify ways to drive profitable sales for my departments. I still go out to our stores and look at the competition regularly like I did throughout my initial graduate training, and it’s still one of my favourite parts of the job; seeing your team's vision and strategies executed on the shop floor and customers buying your products!
How much responsibility were you given? From your first week you are given a department of your own and it is your responsibility to drive that business. You get a huge amount of support from your Line Manager and existing Analysts in conjunction with a very comprehensive training programme but what makes it so exciting is knowing that the decisions you make will have a definite impact on the department's sales that you can see in stores all around the UK and Ireland. I still remember the very first product I decided to send to stores five years later!
Tell me about your ongoing development since you joined TJX Europe. Even after my Graduate training I have been encouraged to focus on my personal development. It’s a huge focus within the company and something we get a lot of support on. My Merchandise Director encourages me to get involved in company-wide projects which help raise my profile and we have a dedicated development programme at every level of merchandising. I now even get involved in recruiting and training our new graduates which I love.
Any top tips for a student interested in joining TJX Europe? Get out to our stores and have a proper look round. You need to get excited by the brands and products you see. We can train you on all the technicalities but you need to have that passion from day one. If you have that, and enjoy a fast-paced working environment, this is a very rewarding career option. The opportunity for progression is fantastic and we really encourage our Analysts to own and drive their own businesses from day one which makes us stand out amongst other retailers.

Why did you decide to join TJX Europe? I decided to join TJX Europe because it looked like a really fun and fast paced organisation. I am really passionate about product and was intrigued how TJX Europe as an off-price business worked. I wanted a role that was both stretching and enjoyable. Everything that I had read about the business was positive and it looked like a well structured and thorough Graduate Programme.
Tell me about your career progression. I joined TJX Europe in February 2011 as an Allocation Analyst within the Merchandising function. I was responsible for managing my mix and ensuring every customer was excited when they walked into our stores. From there I then got promoted to Senior Analyst and then Assistant Merchandiser. My goal was however to move into Buying. I achieved my goal in July 2013 and am now an Associate Buyer on Active Wear.
What is it like to work at TJX Europe? Working at TJX Europe is genuinely fun and exciting. You are given a huge amount of responsibility from the word go. The culture within the company is great and nobody is too senior to stop and chat to. Relationship building is key to getting along in this organisation and a can-do, curious attitude is key to success.
What is a typical working day like? No two days are the same at TJX Europe. Having now moved into buying my days can take a lot of different forms. Some days will be spent in the office looking at reports and data whilst others will be spent out on the road, meeting vendors, visiting stores and competitor shopping. We are an extremely flexible organisation and I have to be flexible to be efficient and get the most out of my day.
How much responsibility were you given? After an intense but rewarding training induction programme, I was given a great deal of responsibility and was encouraged to really own my business. Having recently moved into buying I am still learning a great deal, however there is nothing better than being out there by yourself and putting things into practice.
Tell me about your ongoing development since you joined TJX Europe. You really do never stop learning at TJX Europe. There is always something new that you learn on a daily basis whether that is in the office, out in stores or even at vendor appointments. The culture at TJX Europe is very unique and everyone is happy to share ideas and opinions to help other people learn and develop.
Any top tips for a student interested in joining TJX Europe? Do your research on TJX Europe to ensure that this organisation is for you. Get to some of the careers fairs and talk to the people on our stand to see what the application process and training scheme is like. Be yourself.
