At FDM we want you to apply what you’ve learned at degree level to a role that you’re truly interested in and fast-track your career in IT Support Management. ITSM typically involves supporting the IT systems which are currently used across a business. Analysts are responsible for dealing with incidents and requests that an end user may have, and then providing or coordinating the solution. However, it doesn’t matter whether you have a background in technology or not, what matters most is your passion for technology and innovation.

As the UK’s leading IT Graduate Employer, FDM is a professional services provider to over 180 clients including Barclays, Sky and Virgin Media and launched the careers of over 1,100 graduates in 2016. You’ll start your journey towards becoming an IT Service Management Analyst in one of our three academies in Glasgow, Leeds or London with fully-funded training as well as mentoring support throughout your career at FDM. Following the training, you’ll provide professional consultancy services to one or more of our clients across the UK.

  • Taking ownership of the production and application estate, ensuring a high service quality is delivered to all of the users

What we’re looking for:

  • Excellent communication skills and an ability to build relationships
  • Ambitious, with a drive to succeed within the IT industry
  • Degree of 2.2 or higher, preferably within Science, Technology, Computing, Engineering, Maths or similar
  • Strong analytical ability

Case Study 1

Scott McMorris – Java Developer

I trained at FDM’s Manchester Academy in Java Development and been working as an FDM Consultant at Citi Group in Belfast. There are four Developers supporting EMEA, all based in Belfast, with a global team of around twenty. I work on a low latency, multi-threaded application. The application is a client connectivity gateway, which connects to clients to validate and manage the orders they send, passing them on to the correct destination.

My work consists of two main roles: development and 3rd line support, and I work with UNIX and SQL on a daily basis. On a typical day I will start by checking the team emails and investigating any issues. We have over four million messages passing through the application daily, so bugs are often extremely specific in scope. I will start off by getting a high level view of the use case, and check through the logs to understand why the issue is occurring. If this does not reveal the reason, I will try to replicate the issue in our development environment, which gives scope for environment manipulation and finer detailed log messages.

In my role, time is of the essence when finding issues and the fact that we are client-facing means that outages are very visible, often causing financial and reputational loss. I enjoy rising to the challenge this poses.

Case Study 2

Nazmin Begum –Test Consultant

I joined FDM in August 2010, straight after graduating with a BSc Business Information Technology degree from Coventry University. To kick-start my career as a Software Test Analyst I undertook training with FDM, which has enabled me to smoothly transition into the working world and become an essential member of a software development team. I highly recommend the training provided as it gave me the head start needed to pursue a career in the IT industry.

In my current role I am placed at Freshfields, a law firm based in London and am currently working on multiple projects. In one of the projects I started out as a Test Lead testing the office templates, but my role has continually grown through the successful completion of tasks. As part of my role I also project coordinate, guide development, work on business analysis and act as a solutions architect. All of which have been an exciting challenge and I have thoroughly enjoyed working in all areas of the system development life cycle. The work can be very demanding and I have had to put in many long hours to get the job done but it gives you a great feeling of satisfaction once completed.

Without the opportunities provided by FDM I do not think I would have gained the experience needed to achieve what I have to date. I would not hesitate in recommending FDM to any graduate seeking a career within the IT industry. It has been the best career choice I have made.

Case Study 3

Dipak Devalia – Application Support Analyst

I graduated from the University of Leicester with a degree in Computer Science with Management in July 2011. I started my training with FDM two months later on the Application Support stream, where I further developed the skills associated with my degree course.

The training included SQL, UNIX, PL/SQL, VBA and two certifications in Investment Operations Control and ITIL. One focused on the banking environment and the other regarding Service Desk, which is where my role currently lies. The core skills I learnt during training equipped me for life in the business world; each module was extremely helpful in fully preparing me for my role.

In late 2011, I joined Barclays Corporate in Knutsford as an FDM Consultant at their Global Technology Head Quarters, and supported a number of different banking applications in Second Level Support. My role involves ensuring Siebel and the other applications I support remain stable for the business users, as well as working closely with Project Managers to improve technical performance.

I enjoy the buzz around the office, knowing that what I am doing makes a huge difference to business users but in particular the bank. There are ample opportunities to improve my knowledge in what I do. There is also a gym onsite and a football team, which I captain, as well as plenty of opportunities to get to know other people within the bank.

A typical working day involves resolving ‘incidents’ business users have for the application as well as working closely with Project Managers to improve the performance. My day does not always end there though; sometimes I am on call. After all, it is about going the extra mile to make a big difference.
