The Programme:

Working in our fast paced retail environment is extremely challenging and it is not for the faint hearted, the days can be long and demanding. We operate 7 days a week, 363 days a year and you will often be required to work early in the morning, late in the evenings and at weekends. Retail Management is exciting and great fun but it is not for everyone and you should decide before applying if it is right for you.

During our set 12 month programme you will experience almost every part of our business. You will have all of the support and training you need but you will find the job demanding, requiring excellent organisational skills and an ability to work efficiently.

After 9 months you will have acquired the necessary knowledge and management skills to enable you to take on the challenge of running one of our branches. This, the climax of the year, will see you running your own branch for three months, managing a team of up to 40 people. You will have to draw on all of the knowledge and experience gained to date and you will have to work effectively, adopting a positive attitude as you motivate your team to overcome the daily challenges of running a successful business. Case Study 1

HANNAHHannah

TELL ME A BIT ABOUT YOU?
My name is Hannah and I graduated from University with a degree in Human Geography. I have just successfully completed the Management Development Programme and I am now responsible for managing and running the largest store in Derby.

WHY DID YOU CHOOSE A CAREER IN RETAIL?
Before working for Farmfoods I had never worked in retail before. However in previous jobs I had experienced customer service roles and they were something I enjoyed. These were skills I wanted to build upon in my career and retail was the perfect opportunity to do this. I work best when under pressure and therefore the fast pace of retail was the right choice for me.

WHY DID YOU CHOOSE FARMFOODS?
Farmfoods appealed to me as customers always come first. The Farmfoods culture is based around doing whatever it takes to ensure our customers have the best shopping experience possible. Farmfoods is an expanding business and I believe this is a really exciting time to be a part of the journey. Farmfoods also look after their staff well. The new e-learning training tool is an interactive way of learning the theory behind the job and then in store you are able to demonstrate this.  As part of this programme you will be trusted to run your own branch after just nine months in the business. This was an incentive for me as I love responsibility and the chance to motivate my own team really appealed to me.

DESCRIBE A TYPICAL WORKING DAY
Typically I’ll be in work at 6am, an hour before we open. In this hour the focus will be on cleaning and tidying ensuring the shop is perfect and ready for our customers when we open. Whilst we do this the delivery will arrive ready to be worked. In the morning the delivery is the main focus as we need to ensure all products are well stocked for our customers. It is not just retail assistants who work delivery; as a Branch Manager it is important that I help to work the delivery as well to ensure the shop is full and tidy and the team are working efficiently. Whilst doing this we continue to offer fantastic customer service by showing customers to products they may be looking for and ensuring our shop is the friendliest place in town. In the afternoon I will set each retail assistant different tasks to complete. This gives me time to either do a rota or maybe spend some time with a new retail assistant training them. Farmfoods recognises the importance of training and developing people so it’s great that I get time to do this with my team in store. This is just a brief outline of some of the typical tasks I complete in my store every day. Each Farmfoods branch is different but we all work towards the same goals of offering clean and tidy stores for our customers operated by the friendliest people around.

WHAT'S THE BIGGEST CHALLENGE YOU'VE FACED SO FAR?
My biggest challenge was the Branch Manager phase. It is a lot of responsibility to undertake and sometimes you can feel the pressure. However Farmfoods offer a great support network and you can always pick up the phone to someone. This phase of the programme is also the most rewarding personally and offers fantastic job satisfaction as you can walk into your clean and tidy store knowing you lead the team that achieves this every day.

WHAT QUALITIES AND SKILLS DO YOU THINK MAKE A "FARMFOODS PERSON"?
A Farmfoods person needs to adopt a positive attitude at all times even when faced with big challenges. They also need to be determined and always finish the job to a high standard. Organisational and time management skills are key, especially when running your own branch, to ensure the branch runs smoothly and efficiently. Being highly self-motivated will help you to get the most out of this Management Development Programme and gain all the necessary experience.

WHAT WOULD YOU SAY TO SOMEONE WHO WAS THINKING ABOUT APPLYING RIGHT NOW?
This programme is challenging and can be difficult at times. If you are determined, friendly and love working under pressure and having responsibility then I would say this programme is for you! Farmfoods offer fantastic training and exposure to many different situations in order to build up your experience and skills which become very useful when running your own branch.

WHAT ARE YOUR FUTURE DEVELOPMENT AND CAREER PLANS?
Over the next few months I want to continue running my branch successfully, achieving my targets and developing and motivating my team. In the future I’d like to become an area manager in which I would be responsible for around four or five stores and continue building upon my skills as a successful manager.

Case Study 2

LOUISE

TELL ME A BIT ABOUT YOU?
I’m Louise, I live in Durham and graduated with a 2:1 degree in business management. I spend my spare time with my horse and socialising with my family and friends.

WHY DID YOU CHOOSE A CAREER IN RETAIL?
Retail was completely new to me and seemed a challenging and exciting industry to be a part of with a wide range of roles and opportunities.

WHY FARMFOODS?
It is a family owned business with values that make it a friendly and professional place to work. The structured programme really appealed and has given me many opportunities to learn different aspects of the business and supported me while I developed into my role as Branch Manager.

DESCRIBE A TYPICAL WORKING DAY
Every day is different at Farmfoods. Although the same routines and daily tasks are carried out there is always something new that comes up and challenges me. This is all part of the fun and allows me to learn and grow as a manager.

WHAT IS THE BIGGEST CHALLENGE THAT YOU HAVE FACED SO FAR
Stepping up from Duty Manager to Branch Manager and knowing that the branch was my responsibility. With my experience and knowledge gained on the programme and the support I had available I made it through and I’m really proud of what I have achieved.

WHAT ARE YOUR FUTURE DEVELOPMENT AND CAREER PLANS?
I plan to continue developing my skills as Branch Manager by managing different branches to build the confidence and experience to pursue an Area Manager role with the company.
