The pros and cons of further study

The pros and cons of further study

I’m thinking of doing a postgraduate course – is there any real gain from an employers perspective in employing a graduate with a masters?
It really depends on what postgraduate study you choose and what kind of career you are interested in. There are plenty of masters courses available that are targeted at specific career sectors. These can be a great way to develop the skills and knowledge that will help you secure your ideal career. Other courses might be great preparation for an academic career but less relevant if you want to get on a corporate graduate scheme.

The pros and cons of postgraduate study

  • Having a postgraduate degree can give applicants a big advantage when applying for roles with fierce competition
  • Although it will not affect starting salaries, having a postgraduate degree can improve a graduate's overall earning potential
  • All the skills learned during a postgraduate degree can be translated into various roles, making a graduate CV more appealing to an employer

  • There is less funding available for postgraduate courses than for undergraduate courses, so it is important to consider how a postgraduate degree could be funded
  • Work experience of any kind is a valuable way to gain essential employment skills; consider carefully whether further study is the best option for your chosen career path
