What do you need for a successful finance career?

What do you need for a successful finance career?

While factors such as Brexit and global, geopolitical concerns are continuing to undermine the financial services sector in the UK, this remains a lucrative and dominant market. It is certainly one of the key contributors in terms of labour market growth and Britain’s GDP, while it also remains a huge draw for students and aspiring young professionals from across the UK. It is also an increasingly competitive market, however, and one where basic qualifications and accreditations are not necessarily enough to win over employers.

3 Things you need for a successful career in finance

With this in mind, let’s look beyond the standard qualifications required to pursue a successful career in finance and instead consider the steps and attributes that can help you to realise your dream.
These include: -
1. Plan your Career Path and Hone in on your Passion
Planning is central to any successful financial career, as this enables you to steal a march on potentially less organised or forward-thinking rivals. This involves mapping out the intricate details of your career path, as while you may be forced to show flexibility along the way it is crucial that you adhere to a chosen course as closely as possible.
A key element of this is honing in on your passion, as this will help you to identify the niche sectors that you would like to operate in. From online brokerage sites such as Axitrader to financial advisor and wealth management roles, there are several channels through which you can apply your skills so it is important to target those that are the most appealing. This will enhance your level of drive while also allowing to achieve job satisfaction over time.
2. Seek out Additional Education and Practical experience
While a theoretical grounding of your chosen area of expertise is crucial, this must be used as a platform to launch additional learning and growth. You can build on standard college and degree courses with niche industry qualifications, for example, while constantly seeking out new accreditations as markets and legislative guidelines change over time.
Similarly, practical experience is also crucial. This provides contextual boundaries in which your knowledge can thrive, so do not be afraid to seek out voluntary job roles and internships while studying. This can give you a critical edge when you enter the job market for real.
3. Make Contacts at every Opportunity
From undergraduate and graduate programs to other courses, your education and formative work experience provides you with a unique opportunity to network within the industry and gain crucial contacts. These are the people that have influence within your chosen sector, from employers and experts to prominent recruiters.
These individuals can all have a positive impact on your career, so adopt a proactive approach to engaging them and building a network that can present you with opportunities as you progress. This can represent the difference between success and failure in a competitive market. So the sooner the start, the better the results will be.
