How to build your relationship when working with a recruiter
If you spend enough time on LinkedIn you will come across people sharing bitter experiences with recruiters. A lot of the issues that people complain about are because there is a lack of trust and respect because there is no relationship. Firstly Recruitment Consultants have a relationship with the client that exist before you come into the picture and they are paid by the client not the candidate. It’s in your best interest to get on with them so they can put you in front of their clients. It’s never just about your qualifications, you also have to have the right skills and be professional. If an agency recommends an unprofessional candidate, it impacts their credibility and reputation with the client. So how can you nurture this relationship?
Face to face meetings
Wherever possible have a face-to-face meeting. This can be facilitated when you first register with the agency. If you can, try and do this in person. Personalising who you are helps them to confidently sell you and your skills- a bit difficult if you have never met, you just become one of many CVs sent to an employer.
Follow up communication
Before you apply for roles, give the named Recruitment Consultant a call. Find out as much as you can about the role and employer. This also helps you sift non-existent roles and poor agencies. Respond to emails promptly and confirm appointments promptly.
If you go for an interview, get in touch with your Recruitment Consultant and give them feedback about your experience. This will also help you when you ask them to get feedback from their client.
Always do what you say you will do. If you are not able to meet an appointment, be upfront about it and arrange a more suitable time, than cancelling last minute. If you feel you are not up to the roles you are being put forward for, have honest conversations to steer you back in the direction of what you actually want.
Never show up late to appointments and interviews. Always be polite and patient. Seek to understand the people you are dealing with and express your views in a non- confrontational manner. Act on the feedback that you receive.
Maintain regular contact
Be pleasant but don’t waffle. Recruitment Consultants can be very busy so be respectful of their time. Find out what roles are coming through, is there anything they think you would be suitable for, how can you improve your position. Take their calls when you can or politely rearrange if you can’t talk.
