What made you choose the Enterprise Management Training Scheme in the first place?
I have always wanted to become a business man. When I looked at the Enterprise company profile, it was clear to see that this company had all that and more to offer. The company had a fantastic reputation and it was the only company that mentioned how looking after your customers and employees was important. Without the two it is difficult to get any kind of profit or run a successful business. My idea was that the company would help me develop the skill of how to look after a team and how to go the extra mile when dealing with customers in order to maintain a high percentage of customers and employees.
What have you been up to during your time on the scheme?
I have fulfilled many duties whilst being at Enterprise; the duties are far from just making cups of coffee and tea. I have liaised with many high profile insurance companies such as direct line and Tesco. I have also created many great relationships with companies who wish to rent cars. After being promoted to Heathrow Airport I have been given the chance to run the office over a full working day. Having been the top sales individual within the Heathrow branch, I have also been taken out to many great outings such as Thorpe Park, and to great dinners in Central London.
Can you describe your current role to us?
Currently, my role includes meeting and greeting customers and offering the best customer service possible. My duties also include training individuals who are newer to the company than me and making sure that they are comfortable and happy.
Meeting companies who do business with us is also another one of the duties that are part of my day. This includes visiting corporate accounts, and making sure payment is kept up to date by chasing unpaid invoices.
What does a typical day involve?
What’s the training been like in your current role?
The training with Enterprise Rent-a Car has been an unbelievable experience. It has provided me with the tools to understand why providing great customer service is important. It has helped me to develop a lot more than University has; it is done in a fun environment and explained very thoroughly in order to help work with the systems within the working environment.
What skills has the training helped you develop?
The skills I have learned through training is to go the extra mile for customers, making sure that the team I work with are happy and not stressed, improving my sales technique and my presentation skills.
What’s the biggest challenge you’ve faced?
The biggest challenge I have faced being at Enterprise was moving to the Heathrow branch. Being the largest branch within the UK; all eyes were on this one branch. So learning the process and the products sold within the branch was hard to get used to but the management made it as easy as possible and also made it a faster learning experience.
Can you tell us a little bit about your working environment – what makes Enterprise culture so special?
The Enterprise team makes it a great environment to work in; because the culture of the team is fun, outgoing and everyone takes an interest in each other. Even the managers are personable, fun and are always there when help is needed. They never make you feel alone.
Below are 2 of our founding values, which one of them means the most to you and why?
- Our doors are open
- We work hard and reward hard work
My favourite value is “our doors are open”. This is a great way to promote a business as it makes everybody feel welcome, whether they are customers or employees. Being felt welcome is very important, people that feel welcome would always come back, and that is what Enterprise is all about. We really do reach out to all types of people.
What skills and qualities do you think people need to do well on the scheme?
I believe that people who have ambition, who are driven and who are self motivated will do very well. The primary skills that help individuals would be the way that they can connect with people. Having great communication skills and their ability to go the extra mile for the customers would constitute to that individual to go very far within the company.
What advice would you give people thinking about applying for the scheme?
My advice would be to read the website learn the company’s values to see if they match your own. If your values are the same then this is the place for you. Don’t be afraid and give it a try. If you are interested in business and wish to have your own business one day, working for Enterprise will provide you with all the skills to make your business a success.
Has the scheme lived up to your expectations?
The scheme has lived up to be more than what I expected, It has made me into a more confident, positive and hard working individual. The scheme has transformed me into a person who is not scared to make decision and has also provided me with so many new skills.
Once you’ve completed the scheme, what does the future hold in store for you?
The sky’s the limit. Having completed the programme within my intern programme has been fantastic. I wish to work my way up the ladder, because Enterprise promotes from within and they have provided me with so many great opportunities.
Finally – imagine the year is 2020, and you’ve just been voted business person of the year. Who do you thank in your acceptance speech, and why?
If I was ever lucky to win the business person of the year the first two people I would thank would be my parents. They have supported me through so many struggles and have never given up on me. I would also thank Enterprise for the way that they developed me. Had it not been for them I would not have been a confident person who is afraid to make decisions. I would also thank all the mentors I have worked with, especially the team at the Heathrow Airport branch.

Name – Shamik Patel

Current role at Enterprise – Branch Manager
Date joined Enterprise – 2006
What made you choose the Enterprise Management Training Scheme in the first place?
I joined Enterprise Rent-A-Car because I wanted a career and not just a job. Enterprise offered me a fast track structured Management Training Programme where I would gain promotions based on performance and not tenure in the company. I didn’t want to have to wait 10 years or longer to get promoted and I wanted to make sure I was in full control of my own career path.
Also, I wanted a role that would keep me active throughout the course of the day and an opportunity to meet people from all walks of life.
What have you been up to during your time on the scheme?
I have been lucky enough to work at four different Enterprise Rent-A-Car branches during my time here. I started at our Park Royal office and then moved across to our Palmers Green location. Due to a promotion to assistant manager I got a chance to go to Walthamstow and that was within my first year in the company which was fantastic. I then got promoted within 8 months to Branch Manager at Walthamstow. I am currently working at the Enfield location.
I have also had opportunities to go on various days out through sales competitions such as Go Karting and Thorpe Park to dining in some fantastic restaurants in London.
Can you describe your current role to us?
I am currently Branch Manager at our Enfield location and my role consists of managing a team of 7 people and aiming to get the best out of them. I am here to assist with their training and development, and ensuring that our branch is exceeding the expectations set. My main role is to oversee our business and ensure we are following best practices in order to make the branch succeed. This includes managing our income statements and balance sheets.
Within the local area I am here to maintain local relationships with dealerships, body shops and businesses along with generating more business by bringing on more accounts.
What does a typical day involve?
I wouldn’t say there is a typical day; each day is different from the previous day. The variety helps keep me motivated as opposed to become a robot and doing the same thing day in day out. Due to the line of our business we are in constant interaction with customers and different accounts and this means that anything could really happen on a given day.
What’s the training been like in your current role?
The training is a combination of classroom and on the job. There is specific training for every role – so it’s not just training when you start as a trainee. As a branch manager I am still learning new things as I progress through my career. I get the opportunity to go away on meetings, training sessions and conferences where I get an overview of our business performance and where we are aiming for in the future.
What skills has the training helped you develop?
The training has given me a lot of tools in order to get the best out of my people. It has taught me all sorts of things from different coaching styles, motivational techniques and delegation to time management. It has also helped me improve my customer service skills and sales skills.
What’s the biggest challenge you’ve faced:
The biggest challenges I have faced is to make sure I quickly acclimatise to the different locations where I have worked. Ensuring we are continuously providing excellent customer service has meant my styles have needed to be adapted dependant on my geographical location.
Can you tell us a little bit about your working environment – what makes Enterprise culture so special?
Enterprise Rent-A-Car has a unique culture in the way no other company does. All employees are driven, hungry and have a determination to succeed. It means that the people I work with have a similar goals and values. I have made some really good friends; some which will no doubt be lifetime friends since joining the company four years ago.
The working environment is fast paced and although we work long hours the time just flies by.
Below are 2 of our founding values, which one of them means the most to you and why?
- Personal honesty and integrity are the foundation of our success
- Great things happen when we listen…… to our customers and to each other
My favourite value is “Personal honesty and integrity are the foundation of our success”. Without having personal honesty and integrity our company would not be where it is now. I think if you want to succeed not only in Enterprise Rent-A-Car but in life these are qualities that you must possess.
What skills and qualities do you think people need to do well on the scheme?
I think if you were planning to choose Enterprise Rent-A-Car as a career path you would need to have a great amount of flexibility, work ethic and a passion to want to succeed. Your own promotion will rely heavily on you and your hunger to want to be the best in everything you do. Along with having excellent customer service skills and an ability to sell.
What advice would you give people thinking about applying for the scheme?
This opportunity is like no other. You will be thrown straight into the deep end in terms of business management. It’s a fast paced environment where you will need to be able to think quickly on your feet. The learning curve is steep and the right candidate will have to show flexibility in order for career progression. You will be expected to work hard but the opportunity for rapid career progression is like no other.
Has the scheme lived up to your expectations?
The scheme has surpassed my expectations. I moved up the ranks a lot faster than the average pace and again this opportunity is based purely on your own determination and desire to want to be the best.
Once you’ve completed the scheme, what does the future hold in store for you?
I am currently eligible for an Area Manager promotion and hoping within the next 6-12 months to have the opportunity to move up the ladder to my next stage. Due to the company’s rapid growth and opening of new branches, more and more positions will become available.
Finally – imagine the year is 2020, and you’ve just been voted business person of the year. Who do you thank in your acceptance speech, and why?
Well it’s the old cliché; I’d like to thank my family and friends for their help and support in order for me to accept this award and all my colleagues for their hard work that have helped me to get where I am today. I’d also like to thank my senior management for their guidance and advice throughout my career.
