Case Study 1
Amandeep – Assistant Director, Leicester
My typical day starts at 11am. First thing in the morning we plan out our day as a team. This involves scheduling our appointments; discussing together what priorities we have that day, and how to get further towards our monthly targets. The targets mean that we’re all constantly motivated and excited about hitting them. Our company Sales Manager, Laura, designs fantastic competitions each month for centre’s that perform well in this area and some prizes have included day’s off, gift vouchers, magazine subscriptions, and most recently a trip together to Barcelona with hotel, travel and spending money! We also hold weekly meetings, which are great opportunities where we develop new ideas that have a direct and immediate impact on how the centre operates.
My morning will then vary every single day. Each member of the team has their own roles to take complete charge of and manage; these include areas such as managing finance, recruitment of tutors, external marketing, developing and training tutors, schools relationship co-ordinator and many more. Each of these brings different challenges and areas of focus and responsibility. My role of External Marketing Manager stretches my creative side, I plan out marketing events that may take place all over the area through the local community, and in addition I build up good relations with marketing contacts. In contrast my role as finance manager requires me to be organised and focused. I dip into lots of my roles throughout the morning, some mornings spending more time on particular ones that others depending on what I feel is a current priority for the centre.
At 3 o’clock the centre opens, and the tutors and children arrive. I really enjoy the fact that all the children and parents are on first name basis with us, and that we get to know them all individually. As a manger also focused on mentoring the tutors; ensuring they are doing a great job, and that all of the children are having great sessions. Working with the tutors also involves implementing their initial induction training, holding monthly training sessions with all the part time staff, and aiding their personal development through appraisals. I have always found this an incredibly rewarding responsibility.
During the afternoon I will hold various appointments with parents to help aid the growth of the centre and maintain customer retention. These include Trial Sessions to showcase the centre to interested parents; I work with their children and demonstrate the benefits of Explore for their individual needs. I also hold Parents Consultations with current member’s to feedback to them about their child’s progress and development with us, this is a great way to build up long term relations with our members and maintain their enthusiasm for the centre. Towards the end of the evening I will be on the telephone, calling prospective members that we have met and confirming the appointments for the next day. I may also spend some time speaking to shoppers in Sainsbury’s about the centre to build peoples awareness, and this may involve getting children involved in related activities as well as chatting to interested parents.
I love the fact that my day involves constant interaction with people, I often find I have not stopped talking all day! I also enjoy the opportunity to get out into the community and not always stay in one place. This may involve going into local schools to run numeracy and literacy activities with the children, doing workshops with local Brownie groups or running marketing events in the town centre. Most of all I love the variety every day brings, and the feeling of real responsibility I get with Explore!
