GCHQ - Government Communications
About GCHQ
GCHQ is one of the UK’s three intelligence and security agencies (alongside MI5 and MI6). The only one based outside London - in Cheltenham, Gloucestershire - we play a crucial role in countering threats to British people and interests. Our remit is clearly defined, with two specific roles:
Signals Intelligence - using some of the world’s most powerful technology to gather and analyse intelligence, which is then used by our customers (for example, the Government, law enforcement agencies and the military) to inform foreign policy or fight terrorism and crime. Information Assurance - working to protect and secure information on Government IT and communication systems from hackers and other threats. This work is carried out by CESG, a specialist organisation within GCHQ, and the National Technical Authority for Information Assurance. The focus is on keeping one step ahead of people who are, in turn, trying to keep one step ahead of GCHQ.
