GCHQ - Government Communications

About GCHQ

GCHQ is one of the UK’s three intelligence and security agencies (alongside MI5 and MI6). The only one based outside London - in Cheltenham, Gloucestershire - we play a crucial role in countering threats to British people and interests. Our remit is clearly defined, with two specific roles:

Signals Intelligence - using some of the world’s most powerful technology to  gather and analyse intelligence, which is then used by our customers (for example, the Government, law enforcement agencies and the military) to inform foreign policy or fight terrorism and crime. Information Assurance - working to protect and secure information on Government IT and communication systems from hackers and other threats. This work is carried out by CESG, a specialist organisation within GCHQ, and the National Technical Authority for Information Assurance. The focus is on keeping one step ahead of people who are, in turn, trying to keep one step ahead of GCHQ.

The roles

Do you want access to some of the world's most advanced technology, the chance to tackle global issues like hacking or terrorism, and a competitive salary? If so, take a look at our world of work. You won’t find career opportunities like these elsewhere – highly relevant to the world we live in, constantly evolving, extremely challenging, and always interesting. This year we anticipate opportunities in the following areas:

  • IT
  • Internet
  • Engineering
  • Languages
  • Information Assurance
  • Mathematics
  • Research & Development
  • Information Science

In addition to our permanent roles we also offer summer and year-long placements. As a Sponsored Undergraduate Technologist you'll be involved in a fascinating world of work and there will also be the prospect of a permanent position upon graduation. Application details and entry requirements are provided on our website when opportunities become available.

Our culture

Our work might be secret, but that doesn't mean we work in silence or alone! One thing that strikes new starters - apart from the interesting work and range of career pathways - is how friendly and helpful everyone is.

We want you to do well, and that means supporting you fully with training and development opportunities. We're an established 'Investor in People', and all of our people have access to an individual Continuous Personal Development plan, and support - where applicable - to study for professional qualifications.

Further information

As a Civil Service organisation, we offer excellent conditions and benefits, including attractive pension options and competitive salaries (reviewed annually), plus life-friendly flexible working.

To apply you must be a British citizen (further details about our nationality and residency requirements can be found on our website). Due to the sensitive nature of our work, the recruitment and security vetting process can take up to six months.
